2+2 = 4 Lake VBC Athletes Heading to the USA Beach Volleyball National Championships

Left to Right
Cyrene Hertzog, Gabby Flake, Alexis Mcklintock, Kamarin Root, Karina Dahlquist, Kayla Siler, Hannah Aaenson, Front Kendal Solis, Back Coach Mati Bishop

Cyrene Hertzog and Gabby Flake are the best of friends and after three years together are tough to beat on the beach volleyball court, but after winning the U14 Gold Medal at the USA Junior Beach Volleyball National Qualifier Tournament hosted by the Alki Volleyball Association on July 1,the team has split and the girls will head to Milwaukee Wisconsin on July 27 and 28 to compete in the National Championship with different partners.

When the pair won their bid to nationals, Flake realized that the tournament fell on the same weekend as the Indoor High Performance Championship Tournament in Des Moines, Iowa. Flake had been chosen for the Puget Sound Region High Performance Camp and was unwilling to commit to the Beach National Championship as she focused on winning a spot on the 10 player roster the Puget Sound Region was taking to the High Performance Championships and making the next step up the USA Volleyball Indoor National Team Pipeline.

Flake narrowly missed out on making the High Performance team, but by the time the camp had ended and the roster was announced, Hertzog had all ready committed to playing in Wisconsin with the Lake Volleyball Club 14-Blue teammate Janelle Groeneweg. This opened the door for another of their teammates, Jessica Clark (who finished as the first alternate for the High Performance Team) to make the trip with Flake and double the number of Lake Volleyball Club players represented.

While the U14 division of the USA Junior Beach National Championships will feature two teams from Lake Volleyball Club, the U12 division will be missing another Gold Medal team from Lake VBC. Kamarin Root and Lexi Mcklintock won the gold medal for the U12 Division at the July 1st qualifier with a dominating performance that saw them best a number of U14 teams on the day. The duo will wait until later in their beach volleyball career to travel to the national championship. While they wait, they have all ready won the gold medal for the U12 Division at the Subway Washington State Games and finished at the top U12 team in the Jetty Master Volleyball Tournament. Lake VBC 12-Red player Karina Dahlquist also earned a bid to the national championship by finishing third in the qualifier with her friend Kendi Solis, but will not travel to Nationals.

Bigvolley.com will be bringing you as much coverage as possible of the Northwest Teams competing in the US Junior Beach Volleyball Championship.  If you are heading to Nationals, we want to hear from you.  Email your story to mati@bigvolley.com.
